LEARN HOW TO CHOOSE A CAREER

Yes we do have to LEARN how to choose the right career. I say this because I meet many young people who don't know what it is they want to do, and stumble around from 1 idea to another. So what steps should you take to find the right career for you.

First of all you should realise that you are a totally unique person. You can't decide a career would be right for you because you're friend or relative says its good.

Second you must realise that your being conned. Employers need workers particular to their needs. And many people try to decide what to do by looking at what jobs are out there. If you try to fit into a job you may be happy but many people are stuck in jobs they hate for many years, sometimes for life. This is because they didn't choose the job, they let the job choose them. So how should you go about finding the job that's right for you?

Now you have to take a step back. Stop looking at jobs because you need to find out one thing first "WHO ARE YOU". Most of us think we know but most of us don't because we've never asked ourselves this question.

To find out who are you, you have to ask yourself some critical questions and give yourself honest answers. Take a peice of paper and write down the answers to questions like What am I good at? What am I bad at? What sort of things do Ilike to do? What things do I hate doing? Am I an inside sort of person? Am I an outside sort of person? Do I like to do my own projects my way? or Do I like to work with others in a group?

You can probably think of a lot more questions which will help you define the person you are.

Now you have a clearer idea of the person you are you can match your answers to what is needed in different jobs. By now you might be looking at totally different career choices than you started with.

It may be that you are thinking about a number of careers and are having difficulty deciding between them. Here I would suggest you look at what qualifications are required. Sometimes you are able to choose a study course which would give you the opportunity to advance your skills towards many careers, so you could study now and make your final choice later.

I hope these tips might be helpful they are based on 30 years of making mistakes!

A wise man once said "the key to a happy life is to find something you like doing and then find some way of getting people to pay you for doing it".
